Kirsten Leininger, MS, CADC

Hello and Welcome!

I am a Master’s Level counselor and am currently awaiting licensure. I am also a Certified DIR Practitioner and a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

I work primarily with children and adolescents, with a focus on complex trauma, PTSD, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, emotional neglect/emotional abuse, depression, anxiety, impulsivity, aggression, and substance use.

Using play-based therapy, I work with children to express and process their life experiences or troubles to gain a better perspective of their issues while in a safe, supportive, and unbiased environment. As a DIR Practitioner, I work with neurodivergent individuals across the lifespan, focusing on regulation, engagement, and self-awareness through developmental, individual differences, and relationship-based lenses.

I use a person-centered and relational approach with clients, focusing on developing a supportive, non-judgmental, and compassionate relationship. The relationships I develop with my clients are built on trust, humor, curiosity, and authenticity. My approach to therapy is attachment-based and emotionally focused to help clients process and address the individual complexities in their lives.

I am an adjunct professor in the psychology department at the University of St. Francis, and I also serve as a member on the board of directors for the Illinois Certification Board (ICB).
